University of Washington ADVANCE
Transitional Support Program

Although a university may have excellent leave policies, certain situations may require different solutions or supplemental support. The ADVANCE Transitional Support Program (TSP) for tenure-track faculty provides exactly this type of additional support.

(NOTE: The CIC will accept inquiries at any time during the year for medical emergencies.)

The TSP is available for outstanding science, engineering and mathematics (SEM) faculty (regardless of gender) who are in the midst of major life transitions, such as

  • the birth or adoption of a child
  • personal medical needs
  • family illness
  • caring for an elderly parent
  • assist in balancing personal life and career goals
  • and other situations

Support is offered for up to three academic quarters for the faculty member while moving through such a transition. Examples of support that the program provides include release time and funding for research personnel.

The TSP complements tenure clock extension. Please see the Academic Human Resources website for other UW policies and programs that assist with work-life balance, including leave policies, eldercare, and childcare. Further information about childcare and eldercare options are discussed at the Work/Life website. An additional one-page handout on Family Leave and Tenure Clock Extension is available on the ADVANCE Policy Transformation webpage.

Department Chairs and faculty in ADVANCE departments are encouraged to apply for transitional support grants if they are experiencing a transition.

Administration

The TSP is administered by the UW Center for Institutional Change (CIC).

Support includes:

  • release time
  • research support
  • conference travel
  • other needs (that the faculty member may have for up to three academic quarters)

Approximately three to five awards will be made in the range of $5,000 to $12,000 each. The TSP will be offered over the next five years (2001-2006). (NOTE: This will be the last round of TSP funding through ADVANACE)

If your situation changes after you have been awarded a TSP grant, the TSP committee will reevaluate your award and reserves the right to reduce it to an amount appropriate to the new situation.

If you have questions about the TSP, please contact Eve Riskin (riskin@ee.washington.edu).

Application Process

To apply for a TSP award, please:

    1. Write a statement of need (3-5 pages) indicating the following:
      • Type of transition and number of quarters for which you seek support
      • How this transition will impact your career
      • Type and amount of support you seek, including a budget
      • How this support will advance your academic career during the transition
    2. Include your CV and funding record in the application package.
    3. For personal medical needs, include a letter from the Disability Services Office as described in footnote (1).

A letter of support from your department chair is encouraged, especially if your request is for release time.

At the end of the award period, awardees must be willing to participate in a confidential evaluation process.

Please submit a hardcopy application to:

Applications will be kept confidential.

Applications due: May 15, 2006 (NOTE: The CIC will accept inquiries at any time during the year for medical emergencies.)

(1): Faculty members should first use faculty medical leave. For conditions extending beyond the three months of medical leave or for questions regarding medical or disability leave, please contact the Disability Services Office, 206-543-2624. Do not include information about your medical condition in your application. For purposes of the TSP, the Disability Services Office will, after consultation with you, provide you with a letter to include in your application affirming that you have a qualifying medical condition.
