Work/Life Issues

Information about childcare and eldercare options can be found at the UW Work/Life website:

Nanny Share Network.
The Nanny Share Network is available for UW faculty, staff, and students to connect with other University of Washington families who are interested in sharing a nanny. This free service has been developed by UW Benefits & Work/Life.

Caregiver Directory.
The UW Caregiver Directory provides UW faculty, staff, and students access to a pool of University affiliated individuals who are seeking employment as caregivers. This can take many forms: caring for a child, an elderly person, a family member with special needs, running errands, or doing chores. The Caregiver Directory registers those individuals who are seeking full-time, part-time, short-term, or intermittent care giving employment.

Tender Loving Care at Virginia Mason.
TLC Sick childcare is for children who are mildly ill. The University underwrites the entire daily fee for UW benefits eligible employees working .50 FTE or more and academic student employees. Families pay only a one-time registration fee of $5 per child. Children ages one to 12 years with a variety of illnesses may use this service.

Work/Life Resource Center.
UW Benefits & Work/Life provides information, resources and programs for family and personal needs including parenting, elder care, employee assistance, wellness and more. The center serves faculty, staff and students with books, pamphlets and brochures, videos and computers.

Work/Life Presentations & Conversations.
Join us for free lunchtime seminars featuring excellent speakers covering relevant topics.

National Work & Family Month, October 2008.
UW celebrates National Work and Family Month.

Family Caregiver Network.
An informal, confidential, guided discussion where caregivers can share their experiences and successes. Drop-ins are welcome. Last Tuesday of each month, noon to 1:00 p.m., Work/Life Resource and Learning Center, 4045 Brooklyn NE, Room 31.

Lactation Stations.
If you are a breast-feeding mother, and attending school or working at the UW, you'll be glad to know about the many on-site lactation stations. While it may be hard to leave your baby, it should be easy to maintain your milk supply with the hospital-quality, electric double pumps available for your use at the stations. Most women find it takes less than 15 minutes to express their milk. Some of the lactation stations also provide privacy for mothers who have their own hand- or battery-operated pumps. ADVANCE runs a lactation station in Sieg Hall room 121 for ADVANCE students, faculty, and staff. To use the Medela Symphony pump available in the room, you need to obtain a user kit. Details can be found here.

Seig Hall room 121 is available 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The room is secured 24 hours/day with a digital keypad. Open time slots may be viewed using the online calendar system. Please contact sieg121@u.washington.edu to schedule your time slots and an orientation. During your orientation, you will be asked to review and sign the Lactation Station Agreement. Locker space is available on a first come first serve basis. For more information, please see http://www.washington.edu/admin/hr/benefits/worklife/childcare/lactation-stations.html

The ADVANCE lactation calendar can be found at: http://www.engr.washington.edu/advance/lactationroom.html

UW Carelink.
UW CareLink, the University's Employee Assistance Program (EAP), is available for all benefits-eligible faculty and staff, their families, and household members. In addition to providing confidential counseling at no cost for up to three sessions per concern, legal and financial services are also available for up to 30 minutes per issue. UW CareLink offers critical incident assistance and debriefing, workshops, training, newsletters, and online resources. To make an appointment, call toll-free at 1-866-598-3978 or for 24-hour crisis services call 1-800-833-3031.

Flexible Work Arrangements.
Flexible Work Arrangements is one of the many tools available to help employees blend their work and personal lives. Alternative and flexible work schedules or work plans represent ways to structure work that units can use to either accommodate UW staff preference, or to deal with a unit's unique work requirements.

UW Children's Center.
The three University of Washington Children's Centers provide on-site infant, toddler and preschool care for University of Washington families. The centers are open year-round and serve faculty, staff, and students with differing levels of enrollment priority. The Children's Center at West Campus serves primarily UW Faculty and Staff, while the Children's Centers at Radford Court and Laurel Village give priority to UW Students in Family Housing. All centers are fully enrolled at this time, and it is recommended that a wait list application be submitted as soon as possible. New faculty may sign up on the UW Children's Centers waitlists as soon as they have accepted their faculty position offer. New faculty should fill it out as much of the form as they can and include a note saying that they haven't received their UW ID yet. They may also wish to include a copy of their letter accepting UW's offer.
