Overview

ADVANCE: Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers (May 2001)

The University of Washington (UW) envisions a campus in which all science, engineering, and mathematics (SEM) departments are thriving, all faculty are properly mentored, and every SEM faculty member is achieving his or her maximum potential. UW believes that cultural changes that are designed to help underrepresented groups invariably help all groups and improve the environment for everyone. The programs proposed here fall into that category. The University is designing the programs with women SEM faculty in mind, but plans to offer the programs for all faculty after they are piloted and improved.

Specific goals for this proposal are to:

  • Increase the number of women faculty in the SEM departments
  • Increase advancement of women faculty in the SEM departments
  • Increase leadership by women faculty in the SEM departments

Focus of CIC (Center for Institutional Change)

The University of Washington will transform its culture through its Center for Institutional Change (CIC). The CIC focuses on the implementation of programs designed to eliminate existing barriers and to precipitate cultural change at both the departmental and the institutional level. It is essential to focus on departmental change because individual faculty "live or die" at the department level. Many of the challenges women faculty face have their nexus in the department, in part because of the strong faculty governance culture in academe.

The Center for Institutional Change focuses on:

A comprehensive approach to dissemination will provide an opportunity for UW to share its experiences at the same time as it learns from others. There are a few institutions, several professional societies and some industries that are addressing the issues of low representation of female faculty in engineering and science. A network of institutions and professional associations will be established to facilitate dissemination. UW will also work with industrial partners (initially Boeing, REI, CH2M Hill) to share best practices in effecting cultural change to "warm" the climate for women in SEM.
