2. Responsibilities

In general, departments manage their own programmatic designs such as educational objectives, curriculum plans, mapping objectives to ABET criteria, etc. When curriculum areas are interdisciplinary, the departments involved work together to prepare for ABET. Departments can also design their own assessment methods and are welcome to seek assistance from CELT if necessary.

The College central administration and CELT can provide assistance in areas common to all departmental needs such as:

  1. collecting pertinent assessment data,
  2. consolidating existing data from UW (e.g. OIS database) and its various internal units (e.g. the Graduate School, Office of Educational Assessment, Admission, etc.),
  3. collecting data from national reports for benchmarking,
  4. providing queries and reports to a central database so departments can produce their own reports,
  5. conducting assessment (when appropriate),
  6. analyzing assessment results and providing feedback (when appropriate),
  7. preparing the final ABET documents on CD-ROM to send to ABET.

The College and CELT will also bring external experts to campus for discussions with departments. In addition to the general workshops, these experts are also available for one-on-one meetings with departmental representatives to that department to discuss specific questions.

If a department has some particular assessment goals and procedures (not necessarily in common with other departments' procedures), the College and CELT are willing to help in discussing these procedures or their implementations.

We expect to keep revising this list of responsibilities and procedures as the process evolves.
