Attendees

Frank Ashby (Engineering Advising); Cindy Atman (IE); Gaetano Borriello (CSE); Janice Henderson (Dean's Office); Michael Jenkins (ME); Wendy Mar (Co-op); Mani Soma, Associate Dean; and Tom Stoebe (MS&E).

Discussion

  1. Mani Soma talked about the ABET timeline which was prepared by Larry Ruzzo and presented at the ABET Coordinators meeting in December. The ABET timeline will be posted on the Web by the end of April in a table that includes responsibilities for action items to be performed by departments, CELT, and the College; and the status of the action items. The table will be posted at http://www.engr.washington.edu/abet . The responsibilities and procedures listed in the table will be revised as the process evolves.
  2. The departments are encouraged to put their ABET information on the Web. CITE meets with department staff once a month. If departments need help setting up websites, they can ask CITE.
  3. Michael Jenkins gave an update on Mechanical Engineering's ABET progress. ME formed a permanent ABET Sub-committee under their Undergraduate Committee. ME prepared a roadmap of their tasks to prepare for ABET 2000 as follows: (1) Mission Statement, (2) Program Objectives, (3) Course Goals & Objectives, (4) Assessment Methods, (5) Feedback Loop, (6) Implementation, Documentation of Results, Documentation of Improvements [A/Y 1999-2000], (7) On-going...., ABET Visit (Autumn 2001).

Last Summer, ME's ABET adhoc committee put together a "Methods of Outcome Assessment". The three methods are Standardized, Survey, and Self. Prof. Jenkins presented the components of each assessment method. ME feels that the College can assist with Standardized assessment by coordinating exams and acquiring scores. The College can also help coordinate, send, receive, and compile surveys.

  1. Industrial Engineering has a mission statement. They are almost done with their program objectives. Materials Science & Engineering has a mission statement, program objectives, and are in the middle of course goals and objectives. Computer Science & Engineering has a mission statement and program objectives mapped to learning outcomes. CSE is in the middle of course goals and objectives, and they are just starting assessment methods.
  2. Cindy Atman gave the group information about a request from CELT and the COE Dean's office for proposals to support departments to conduct innovative research to meet department ABET goals. Results from this work will be presented to the departments and COE ABET representatives as the projects are completed. Proposals are due to Cindy Atman by April 23, 1999. Prof. Borriello said CSE has an idea for assessing students that could be one of the projects.
  3. CELT is working with a NW Regional Roundtable in an effort to develop a survey to assess student learning. Co-op might be able to help with this effort. Prof. Atman asked for ideas from the departments for alumni survey instruments.
  4. Cindy Atman will ask Ron Miller about meeting with the ABET Coordinators in mid to late May. He will be asked to talk about objectives and assessment methods.
