MEETING OF ABET COORDINATORS
Thursday, December 16, 1999
11:00 AM, 355 Loew Hall
Attendees
Richard Christie (EE); Janice Henderson (Dean's Office); Michael
Jenkins (ME); Molly Johnson (CELT); Greg Miller (C&EE); Lorena
McLaren (Co-op); Carolyn Plumb (TC); Jenny Seller (CSE); Mani Soma,
Associate Dean.
Discussion
- Michael Jenkins presented the Mechanical Engineering
self-study. ME is documenting their ABET process to show that they
are going through a continual process. ME has filled out as much
of the self-study as possible. To get a copy of ME's ABET EC2000
accreditation procedure, please send e-mail to Michael Jenkins at
jenkinsm@u.washington.edu.
- There was some discussion about how to identify work with
constituents (citizens of Washington State). The importance of
external definition can be decided by each department. Examples of
constituents are the Visiting Committee and industry.
- Richard Christie talked about using course evaluations to do
course assessments. He feels that student improvement should be
measured rather than measuring if the course material is being
taught. The group at this meeting voted in favor of analog
measurement rather than binary. The vote was 5 for analog and 2
for binary. Suggestions were made to change the phrasing. A small
group stayed after the meeting to work with Molly Johnson on
appropriate phrasing.
Action Items
- The group agreed with Molly Johnson's suggestion to re-run
Barbara Olds workshop on assessment and to facilitate teams. Molly
will send out a request for dates.
- There was discussion about using the NW Regional Roundtable
alumni surveys. This survey is common across the state. It is a
very general-type survey, and probably won't work for departmental
assessments. AA and CSE do an organized alumni survey.
- Meeting Adjourned.
- Minutes prepared by Janice Henderson
