MEETING OF ABET COORDINATORS

November 16, 2000

9:30 AM, 355 Loew Hall

Attendees:

Cindy Atman (IndE), Gaetano Borriello (CSE), Rich Christie (EE), Karen Freisem (CIDR), Richard Gustafson (Forestry), Janice Henderson (Dean's Office), Craig Lewis (CELT), Chen-Ching Liu (Assoc. Dean), Lorena McLaren (Co-op), Greg Miller (C&EE), Carolyn Plumb (TC), Peter Schiess (Forestry), Eric Stuve (ChE), Cathy Scott (Writing Ctr. & CELT), Jenny Seller (CSE), Uri Shumlak (AA), Francis Spelman (BioE), Tom Stoebe (MS&E).

Discussion:

1. Chen-Ching Liu could not find the ABET 2001-2002 schedule on the web. There is a 2000-01 schedule. Chen-Ching will keep checking the web. He also phoned ABET about the schedule and is waiting for a reply. Chen-Ching found the following two dates on the web:

- January 31, 2001 = Deadline to request an accreditation by ABET.

- Prior to July 1 of the visit year = deadline for final submission.

2. Rich Christie reviewed the assessment section of EE's self study report and the OEA assessment of the EE program. Rich showed how he mapped out the OEA outcomes to program educational outcomes.

3. Eric Stuve talked about the terminology used by ABET. He explained how the word "outcome" is being confused with "assessment". Ed Jones' suggestion is to at least have a glossary for the self study reports.

These three important words have the following specific meanings for evaluators:

- Deficiency = Criterion is violated.

- Weakness = Criterion is met, but there is some weakness in how it is met.

- Concern = Potential problem.

The group discussed what some of the terminology is and how to use it. It was agreed that the College will follow the ABET terminology.

4. Rich Christie reported that Mani Soma said the ABET teams theme is "closing the loop".

Action Items:

Cindy Atman will arrange a date in February for Ron Miller to visit. The next meeting is on December 7th.
