MEETING OF ABET COORDINATORS
October 26, 2000
9:30 AM, 355 Loew Hall
Attendees:
Cindy Atman (IndE), Gaetano Borriello (CSE), Rich Christie (EE), Karen Freisem (CIDR), Jim Fridley (Forestry), Richard Gustafson (Forestry), Janice Henderson (Dean's Office), Craig Lewis (CELT), Chen-Ching Liu (Assoc. Dean), Lorena McLaren (Co-op), Greg Miller (C&EE), Carolyn Plumb (TC), Peter Schiess (Forestry), Dan Schwartz (ChemE), Cathy Scott (Writing Ctr. and CELT), Uri Shumlak(AA), Francis Spelman (BioE), Tom Stoebe (MS&E),
Discussion:
1. Chen-Ching Liu gave an overview of the ABET activities during the last academic year. The self-studies were reviewed for the dry-run by the evaluators. Chen-Ching sent the self-studies back to the departments with the reviewer's comments. The departments were also sent a summary of the comments from Pat Daniels.
2. ABET still requires course syllabi, books, and homework samples for review during the accreditation visit.
3. The latest OEA alumni study is on the web. Prior studies have to be requested. Each department should use the same criteria for this.
Action Items:
ABET's new self-study template should be available during Winter quarter. The Office of Organizational Infrastructure will notify the departments when it is available on the web.
Based on the comments from Pat Daniels and Ed Jones, it was suggest that the whole College try to use the same terminolgy in their self-studies.
Each department should show, in their self-study, how they use the College-wide units (CELT, Writing Center, Co-op, EDGE, and the Dean's Office).
The Engineering Writing Center documentation should be included in Appendix II of the self-study. It was not included for the dry run.
Cindy Atman will contact Barbara Olds and Ron Miller to visit in early-Winter. Some of the departments would like to meet with them again regarding specific items.
It was suggested that Pat Daniels and Ed Jones be invited back to review the self-studies when they are corrected and conform to the new ABET self-study template.
**Items for the next meeting are (1) Dan Schwartz will share the definitions/terminology used by ChemE; (2) Rich Christie will show how he mapped out the criteria from the OEA alumni study; and (3) Verify the following timeline.
