Student Guide
Advising
The EDGE office will assist you with any questions regarding application, registration, tuition, grades, general university policies, as well as specifics relating to EDGE course content and delivery. For your individual and specific course plan development, please contact your academic department to set up an appointment with a graduate advisor.
Registration / Confirmation Process
Quarterly class schedules are posted on the
EDGE website.
To register for courses, complete the
online registration form on the EDGE web site.
Your registration confirmation will be sent to you after you register for courses.
Newly accepted students must be enrolled for the quarter admitted. Otherwise, they must reapply, or defer admission to a subsequent quarter.
Boeing students: After registering for your course(s), you must fax your LTP voucher to 206.685.9359 or email to uweoreg@extn.washington.edu.

You can drop a course without charge during the first week of the quarter. From the second through the fourth week of the course, half-tuition is charged. From the fifth week on, full tuition is charged for dropped classes.

Call-in Questions
EDGE has the ability to receive calls from students watching live and patch them through to the classroom. Below are instructions:
- To ask a question, or respond to a question from the professor, call (206) 685-1860.
- An EDGE staff person will take the call and put you on hold while notifying the professor. If you hear audio from the class in your telephone's handset, you are next in the queue and should turn down the volume on your computer. The audio you hear on the phone will be "live" while the video on your computer screen will be subject to the 15-30 second delay.
- If you do not hear audio from the class at first, remain on the line. When the audio comes through the phone, that will be a signal that your question is next in the queue.
- When the professor decides to take your question, give your name and where you're calling from, and state your question in a clear, normal speaking voice. Stay on the line during the response for additional questions or clarification, and simply hang up when the exchange is complete.
- If too many students are waiting to ask their questions, you will hear a recording asking you to try again later.
Homework Submittal
Homework should be submitted through the EDGE office, unless otherwise instructed by the professor. All materials going into and out of the EDGE office are logged, so submitting your homework through EDGE is best. You may submit your homework via e-mail to edgematl@u.washington.edu, or fax it to 206/685-7251.
Please make sure your homework includes your name, the class number, the homework number, and the due date. If you fax or e-mail your homework, you will receive a confirmation that it has been received by the EDGE office. Homework extension requests should be addressed to your instructors.
Proctor Policy / Exams
All local (Seattle/Everett/Tacoma) EDGE students are required to come to campus
for their final exams, unless given permission by the professor to take them
off-campus via a proctor.
- Follow the exam guidelines your instructor has given, but in general, students are allowed to take their mid-term exam off-campus by designating an individual to serve as a proctor. The proctor must be someone that is affiliated with Training or Human Resources within the student's company, and an individual that is not reporting, or related to the student. You may also use a local librarian as a proctor. Your proctor is responsible for receiving exams from EDGE via fax or e-mail, holding them in a secure location until the exam date, administering exams, and returning exams to EDGE. Your proctor should be someone who is relatively easy to reach by phone or e-mail.
- Please complete and submit a Proctor Approval Form no later than 5 business days before your exam. Beginning autumn quarter 2007, once your proctor has been approved, you do not need to submit an approval form for subsequent quarters unless your proctor or any of their contact information changes. Instead, we just need you to send us an email each quarter stating that you will be using the same proctor as the previous quarter. Send this email to edgematl@u.washington.edu and copy your proctor on the email (the email address for the proctor must match what we have on file).
- Proctors must be fluent in English.
- The EDGE office must approve all proctors.
The UW Final Exam schedule is available every quarter at www.washington.edu/students/reg/calendar.html. Please note that final exam times are determined by the lecture schedule during the quarter. Please also note that the final exam time and location are subject to change and will be determined by your instructor. Approximately one week before all proctored exams, you will receive an exam notification form from the EDGE office. This form will also be forwarded to your proctor, and contains the exam date and other important information, such as the exam instructions.
Grades / Transcripts
The UW no longer mails grades to students. Grades are typically available the Wednesday following the last official day of each quarter. There are three ways to obtain your grades:
- To view your grades on-line, visit myuw.washington.edu and log in with your UWNetID. If you do not have a UWNetID or do not know what it is, please contact UW Computing and Communications: 206/543-5970, help@cac.washington.edu, or visit www.washington.edu/computing/.
- To obtain an official UW transcript, go to: http://www.washington.edu/students/reg/transcripts.html
Course Evaluations
Online course evaluations are made available to all EDGE students after each course. Your input is important to us and helps improve the program.
Academic Issues
All academic issues between faculty and students are to be handled by the faculty.
Leaves of Absence
If you are a matriculated student, you need to complete on-leave paperwork for every quarter you don't attend - even if you only take one quarter off - with the exception of summer quarter. Graduate non-matriculated students may take three consecutive quarters off, (4, if you include summer), without having to complete leave paperwork. Leave paperwork must be completed and turned in no later than the 5th day of the quarter you intend to take leave.
You can obtain leave paperwork from the your academic department; contact your advisor.
If you don't complete and turn in On-Leave paperwork, you will have to reapply to the university if not meeting the requirements above.
New students: New students must be enrolled for the quarter they have been admitted. Otherwise, they will have to reapply, or defer admission to a subsequent quarter.
Transferring between EDGE and On-Campus Status
The "Petition to Transfer" form can be used if you are an EDGE student who would like to take a course on-campus; or if you're an on-campus student who would like to take a distance learning course through EDGE. This form can be used if you are just taking a class for the quarter or transferring programs. This form should be completed by the student, and approval signatures should be obtained from the student's department Graduate Program Advisor and the EDGE office. You can fax or mail the form to the EDGE Office.
